In 1974 a group of women came together to support natural birth alternatives in Calgary. They called themselves the Alternative Birthing Group. Their goal was to share birth knowledge and experience and support each other through the childbearing year and beyond. Several years later, the group was incorporated under the name of the Calgary Association of Parents and Professionals for Safe Alternatives in Childbirth (CAPSAC).

From those grassroots meetings, the membership grew, and the name of the organization changed to Birth Unlimited. Around the same time, these women decided to share their important message and unique birth stories with the community through a newsletter: hand-typed, pasted-up, photocopied and sent out. This is how Birthing Magazine was born.

Over the past twelve years Birthing Magazine has grown significantly. Thanks in large part to continuing support from our committed advertisers and a growing audience of readers. Today, Birthing Magazine is the resource in Calgary and surrounding areas for birth stories, articles, and information on safe, healthy, natural options in pregnancy, childbirth and early parenting.

We are excited to be celebrating our twelfth birthday in the Spring of 2009 with a newborn logo and full colour glossy format. Look for our next issue on stands now. All the same great information you expect from Birthing Magazine plus a fresh, updated look.
